On a warm summer day many years ago, Vickie and I met
during a volleyball game at the Veterans Hospital in Houston Texas. Vickie was completing
her graduate work in Nursing and I was overseeing a hospital
recreation program that included some of her patients. I was
awestruck at how beautiful she was….it felt like love but, in your
twenties, love and lust are so closely related, I couldn’t be sure.
After an awkward first hello, (regrettably, Vickie initially
thought I was one of the patients) we went out for pizza and over a
very long lunch break, began discovering our love of music,
children, healthcare, the outdoors, animals……and each other. We
were married a short three months later! That was thirty
years ago and along the way we’ve raised two amazing daughters and
enjoyed two successful careers in healthcare. And through it all,
our love for music and performing has remained a driving source of
joy and personal accomplishment.
I'm now retired
from the Department of Veterans
Affairs and Vickie’s practice is still thriving as a Child
Psychotherapist with the University of Maryland’s healthcare system. With our daughters grown and pursuing their own
professional careers in music, we’re discovering that writing music,
performing and collaborating with other musicians and artists is
high on the agenda of things that continues to make us happy and
ever so humble.
